The collared pratincoles were on this road between the samphire-covered coast and the rice fields in the Ebro Delta, 170 km south of Barcelona. On the horizon, you can see the fort ‘Torre San Joan’, built in 1576 by King Philip II. The tower fort served as a defense against pirates.

In English the bird is named by the striking collar. In Dutch the bird is called vork-staart-plevier: fork-tail-plover. Here you see this:
